Going Green on Exeter's Doorstep

08 December 2007 - MillAquia Leisure & Energy is making it easier for local homeowners and businesses to help reduce their carbon footprint.

An Exeter business is making it easier for local homeowners and businesses to help reduce their carbon footprint. MillAquia, at Matford, Marsh Barton has launched its Green Energy division, providing a range of fuel saving devices that are available for both the business and residential sectors.

“For some time we have been considering environmentally friendly alternatives to energy consumption as with further legislation, our carbon footprint is something we will all have to respond to,” says Fiona Wall, of MillAquia.

Initially identifying energy efficient products that would help provide savings in connection with the running costs of swimming pools and other water-based leisure products, also supplied by MillAquia, the company recognised the potential for both general domestic and commercial premises to reduce carbon emissions and minimise costs.

“We have looked carefully to see which products and companies may be able to offer real opportunities in this market.”

The company has now linked up with Kent based FirstLight Energy, a firm specialising in sustainable energy solutions designed to meet the challenges and responsibilities of environmental protection.

MillAquia Green Energy division now provides a range of products from Solar Panels and Evacuation Tubes, together with the unique energy store Power Tanks that maximise the benefits of solar energy.  Power Tanks are energy stores that hold surplus heat generated by the solar panels and tubes.  With an average domestic boiler turning on up to 40,000 times in a season, linking it to a ‘power tank’ can reduce the start-stop cycles by up to 90%, greatly reducing fuel consumption and improving boiler performance, whilst at the same time extending the life of the boiler and reducing costs.

The flat solar panels are designed so that they can be ‘hidden’ by being built into a roof, to resemble a sky light, or mounted to form a balustrade to a balcony.  With enough energy striking the earth in one hour to meet the planet’s energy needs for an entire year, the solar systems use highly efficient triple-coated vacuum tube collectors which convert up to 96% of the energy captured.

In the Spring of 2008, wind energy will be added to the product line up.  Unlike the headline-grabbing towering wind turbines placed in rural settings, urban wind turbines provide a real opportunity to harness the wind in our towns and the surrounding countryside, without being a blot on the horizon.  With improved efficiency and quieter in use compared to earlier turbines, wind energy provides a clean, local renewable energy source with the benefit of lowering overall domestic and commercial energy costs.

“Reducing energy demands has always been one of our highest priorities when specifying domestic swimming pools or spas, with many of our customers turning to renewable energy sources.  It was therefore a natural extension to see what other products are available for general domestic and commercial use,” says Fiona Wall.

“We are great believers in looking for alternative sources of energy and we realised the opportunity our showroom offers in providing an Exeter based ‘Lifestyle Centre’ that includes green energy, which will serve the whole of the South West”.
